I started writing units for my students around 2011, at the same time that I started this blog. I wanted to create something that dug deeper than a topic level and into themes that we could really discuss. By 2019, I had about 18 units written for my level 3 and 4 students and my good friend Martina Bex at the Comprehensible Classroom suggested that I collect them into a cohesive curriculum that would, since we use her SOMOS curriculum in levels 1 and 2, be a natural follow up for those lessons.
I did a lot of mixing them around and adding new ideas but I never really had the time to organize them until… 2020. Suddenly, faced with a lot of unexpected extra time, I worked with my former student Kayla all summer and we mapped out a scope and sequence for the Huellas curriculum. I wrote three new units, and by the fall of 2020-2021, Huellas 1 and 2 were born. The first year, we had about 80 teachers in our Facebook group and on board piloting the curriculum. We spent the year working on new units based on your feedback and ended up adding 5 units to Huellas 1 so that teachers who do not use readers in the classroom would have enough content to fill the school year.
In the 2021-22 school year, we have gone from 150 teachers at the beginning of the year to nearly 600 at the end. We are growing like crazy! I am so excited to see all of the ways these units are reaching beyond my classroom and into yours! And I can’t WAIT to show you what’s in store for next year!! The TPT sale this week holds a sneak peek if you get our new Huellas 2.12 unit Ni una más… 🙂

I am so grateful for each and every one of you. Your feedback, your patience with broken links, your patience with me being a full time teacher and sometimes not responding immediately… you are an amazing group of teachers to work with.
I am so grateful for Dylan and Melisa who help me with the Facebook group and all the Google Drive files. They help write activities in the units and song packets. They honestly help with everything!
Nelly… there wouldn’t BE units without Nelly. She proofs everything! She makes the best suggestions. She finds amazing additions, tells me when I need to rethink my lens, and she is just an amazing friend and colleague.
