Description

Donnez-moi du chocolat ! is an intermediate French 3 comprehensible input unit from the Empreintes curriculum sequence. Designed to build proficiency through global themes, authentic resources, meaningful discussion, and comprehensible French, this one-to-two-week unit invites students to explore chocolate production, sustainability, climate change, fair trade, workers’ rights, and responsible consumer choices.

Throughout the unit, students learn how cacao is cultivated and transformed into chocolate while examining the environmental and human impact of the chocolate supply chain. They engage with cultural readings, songs, videos, a podcast, class stories, collaborative centers, and interpretive activities that encourage them to communicate about real-world issues in French.

The unit begins with high-interest activities such as a chocolate tasting and the song Chocolat by Clay and Friends. Students then rotate through centers focused on topics including Choco Togo, the chocolate-making process, sustainable cacao production, the chemistry of chocolate, Cargill’s sustainability commitments, and interpersonal discussion.

Students also participate in a differentiated class story with three levels of teacher support. Style 1 provides the most structure, Style 2 allows the class to determine more details, and Style 3 gives the teacher a basic storyline and direction for a more open-ended experience. A corresponding student sheet is included for each version.

The unit concludes with Du cacao pour une cause, a creative final assessment in which students design and present a chocolate bar wrapper. Their product name, logo, slogan, and overall design demonstrate what they have learned about sustainable cacao production and the effects of global warming on the worldwide chocolate supply.

Donnez-moi du chocolat ! can be taught as a stand-alone thematic unit or as part of the Empreintes French curriculum. The lessons are designed for approximately 45-minute class periods and include an eight-day face-to-face plan and a seven-day remote or hybrid plan.
