The “food unit” has long been a part of the world language curriculum. This unit is designed to introduce Spanish students to the UN Sustainable Development goal of Zero Hunger. Through a discussion of different dietary needs, food insecurity, and even favorite foods, students dig deeper into the idea of nutrition and hunger around the world.
 
This unit of study is unit 1.7 of Somewhere to Share’s Empreintes curriculum for Intermediate students. It can also be used as a stand-alone unit.

Description

Manger pour vivre is a French 3 CI curriculum unit from the Empreintes 1 curriculum sequence designed to build proficiency through meaningful discussion, global themes, and comprehensible input. In this one‑to‑two‑week unit, students explore food, nutrition, and hunger while engaging with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger. Through discussions of dietary needs, food insecurity, and food access around the world, students deepen their understanding of global issues while communicating in French.

This proficiency-based French 3 curriculum unit supports interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication as students listen, read, discuss, and reflect on real‑world topics connected to food systems and nutrition. Using authentic and adapted texts, music, and guided activities, students build vocabulary and language structures in context while developing empathy and global awareness. The unit balances personal connections, such as favorite foods, with broader conversations about equity and access.

Manger pour vivre can be used as a stand-alone French 3 thematic unit or as part of the growing Empreintes 1 curriculum sequence.

Grammatical Feature

In Manger pour vivre, students will strengthen their ability to describe in detail to discuss their eating habits. Students also explore the conditional tense to discuss what they would or wouldn’t eat. Also, students will use the subjunctive mood to make recommendations for others to eat.
