Let’s Play Spoons!

If you’re familiar with the card game Spoons, this is an easy classroom adaptation to bring the fun and competition with an added layer of comprehension!

You’ll need a self-made deck of cards. Ours today were from Huellas 1.1 Bajo la mesa (there are spoons games in several other Huellas units as well!).

The deck of cards should have 5 groups of 4. In our card deck today, I described 5 different paintings using four different descriptions from our unit of study. Together the groups had 20 cards per group. Ex: Gustav Klimt pintó esta pintura. En esta pintura, hay dos personas besándose. Estas persons llevan puesto ropa de colores brillantes. Hay flores en el suelo de esta pintura. (El beso).

Each group also needs spoons. Much like musical chairs, they need one less spoon than players on the team! It works BEST in groups of 3-4. Try to work out your teams so you have no less than 3 and no more than 4!

Teams deal out their spoons cards (I laminate mine so they survive the game). After students look at their cards, they should begin the round. Everyone looks at the cards in their hand (5-6 cards) and begins to pass simultaneously clockwise. They need to know that it is the MOST FUN if they don’t take turns passing, they should just be looking at the new card, deciding if they want it, and passing that card or another one on to their teammates.

The first teammate to get all 4 cards of of the same theme (mine were paintings but these could be character descriptions, food groups, etc.) grabs a spoon. The other teammates need to stop play immediately and race to grab the remaining spoons. The teammate who does not get a spoon has to record a letter on the score card (you can create a score card or have them use scratch paper). They’ll spell out CUCHARAS in Spanish. We never have time for anyone to get eliminated. I give a sticker to the winner (the player with the least letters on the score card).
