Bianca Nieves y los 7 Toritos chapter 3!

In this chapter we met Bianca’s future step-mom.  Novices can do a great job making predictions about her based on prior knowledge!  We used va a to list some things we would expect her to do because all wicked step-mothers do them in stories!

Now that we had met all the major players we did a teacher’s guide activity!  Each student made a paper fan that served as their prompt in a little presentational speaking!

Check out the full instructions in the teacher’s guide, they did a great job!  I was really proud of some of the deep thinking they did in selecting the symbols for their fans!!

Semester Exams 2015

I’m getting reviews ready for study night tomorrow night.  Our exams begin next Friday, the 18th, and end Tuesday, the 22nd.  We have a 90 minute exam block for each class and a 20 minute study period before each block.  It gives me lots of time to have a 4 part exam.

My plans at all levels are attached (although pretty specific to the content we have studied) and although they are different, the idea is pretty much the same… we are going to read, write, speak, and listen.

In all classes, listening will consist of a 3 minute audio clip from native speaker friends that accompany one of our topics from the semester and a commercial selected for their level.

In all classes writing will consist of a narrative and a letter.

In all classes cold reads will include an article and a text related to topics we have studied this semester and selected for student level.

And in both 3 and 4, students will be doing interpersonal conversation via little conversation cards.  Students already did a debrief on what we had learned in the unit (as a class) by creating 4 categories for the information and then identifying key facts that they remembered from the study.  This review should help them have longer, more detailed conversations during the study period.  At 20 minutes, my goal is to have them spend 3 minutes on each of 6 cards. Sample topics: What impact do humans have on the rainforest? (Spanish 3- their conversation with their tour guide was heavy on the negative impact facts) Water and power (Spanish 4- how does the person who controls the water have power?)  In Spanish 2 we are doing our interpersonal feature this week (we are doing presentational in 3 and 4) so they will focus on a more presentational type speaking for their exam.Exam Review 1 Spanish 2 2015Exam Review 1 Spanish 3 2015Exam Review 1 Spanish 4 2015

Bullfighting with Bianca Nieves chapters 1&2

On Monday we read the story El Toro Ferdinando and yesterday we watched the dubbed Disney short Ferdinand.  We followed the video with chapter 1 of the novel Bianca Nieves y los 7 Toritos in which we meet her bull Ferdinando! We made some predictions about the novel based on what we saw when we watched the 2011 movie Blancanieves and from reading the story Snow White… What are some key elements of a fairy tale?  What elements make a fairy tale more like Disney and which make it more like Grimm!  As level 2 students they can make great connections!

Mine have decided that the novel is going to be more like Grimm!  We shall see!  They have also started a “Burn” chart where they are keeping track of Bianca and Salomé’s spats.  I think they’ll be surprised how infrequently Bianca gets the upper hand!

Today we read Chapter 2 which talked about the ranch property size and the budding relationship between dad and Salomé (not-so-lovingly nicknamed Salami). We followed with an activity from the teacher’s guide called “Picasso of Plates”!

They had a great time trying to draw the ranch!

An Ode to Flexible Seating

Oh tables and chairs, I love you.

You move and you fold and you leave me more space.

When I want to do hula hoop Venn diagrams, I always have just the place!

Oh tables and chairs how I love you!

You leave so much room for the lounge!

Where the kids come and read, or hang out in the beanies, even when no one’s around.

Oh table and chairs I just love you!

There is so much more room on the floor!

It looks like a mess but to me there’s no stress because there’s room for activities galore!
